Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar levels.  This can happen if your puppy has not eaten enough
or gotten enough rest.  Symptoms are light to white colored gums, listlessness, chilled
trembling, weakness drooling and seizures in severe cases.  Be sure your puppy is eating.  I
recommend mixing a little Karo syrup in their water bowl for the first week in a new home.
Nutrical can also help prevent hypoglycemia.  Let the puppy lick this from your finger a few
times a day, especially before bed or anytime you will not be around to monitor them eating
for several hours until you are confident it is eating adequately each day.  If you do suspect
your puppy is hypoglycemic rub Karo or Nutrical on the gums under tongue and roof of
mouth.  Warm the puppy up on a heating pad.  If the puppy begins to respond go ahead and
feed him a meal.  The puppy should be fully back to itself at this point and all is fine.  If the
puppy does not respond  to the Karo or Nutrical call your Vet immediately, keep the puppy
warm and follow the Vet’s directions.  Once all is well please be sure the puppy is eating well
to prevent this from happening again.

Diet & Treats
My yorkies are fed Eukanuba small breed dry food.  Please leave fresh food and water down
all the time for your puppy and be sure that he or she eats.  They are given Eukanuba small
bites biscuits and small rawhide bones for treats.  I do not give Greenies.  I do not like them.
All of my dogs seemed to have problems digesting them.  If you feed your dog treats from the
table be sure not to give them chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, onions or
mushrooms.  These are toxic to dogs

Ears
The hair on your puppy’s ears should be shaved on the tips to keep the ear from being
weighed down.  Yorkie ears are normally standing at 4-5 months.  Some yorkies need their ears
tape trained in order to stand.  Some ears don’t ever stand due to the size and shape of them.
Sometimes a puppy’s ears will fall when they are teething the jaw teeth.  Just keep the hair
trimmed and they will come back up.

Teeth
Yorkies are prone to retaining some of their baby teeth.  Have your Vet check for this around 6-
7 months old  If any are retained the Vet will have to pull them out to avoid overcrowding.
Yorkies usually need to have the Vet clean their teeth once every 2 years.  This is important
because excess tarter can lead to tooth loss or poor health.

Bathing
I bathe my adult Yorkies once a week and puppies once every few days.  I use PetSilk
shampoo and conditioner on them.  I do the bath in the kitchen sink with a sprayer and a baby
wash cloth for their faces.  I clean the ears with an ear cleaning solution and q-tips prior to the
bath.  I also use dental cleansing pads to clean their teeth at this time.  Once they are all fresh
and clean I wrap them in a towel and trim the nails. The nails are soft after a bath and easier to
trim. I do this with a small pair of dog nail scissors.  I lay them on their back in my lap and use
the towel to keep the other three feet wrapped up while I work on one paw.  This helps to keep
them from trying to push your hand away.  Yorkies have a tendency not to like their nails
trimmed.  Now that the nails are done it is time to brush and dry them.  I blow dry while I
brush them with a pin brush.  I use a fine tooth comb for around the face.  I pull the hair on top
of the head up and secure with a grooming rubber band and add a bow sometimes.

Trimming
I use the Wahl Tid Bit trimmers to do any shaving necessary.  The hair on the top half of the
ears has to be shaved off to keep the ears standing.  Some Yorkies have hair that grows inside
of the ear canal. I put rosin ear powder in the ear and use small tweezers to pluck this hair out.
If this is not done the hair will collect wax that can lead to an infection.  I keep the hair shaved
down on the little girls’ bottoms and the little boys belly area to avoid the hair collecting urine.
I also use the trimmers to shave off the hair on the bottom of the feet and to round them.  I use
hair cutting scissors to trim the hair out of the corners of their eyes and to trim away the hair on
their bottoms.

Brushing
Yorkies need to be brushed daily.  I use a light spray conditioner called Miracle Coat to mist
them down.  Then I use a pin brush for the body and a fine tooth comb for the face and head.
A slicker brush works great for tough knots or mats.  If you keep your Yorkie in a top knot you
will need to take it down and redo it almost daily to keep it neat looking.

Outdoors
Please be careful with your puppy outside.  Yorkies are very small dogs and subject to attacks
by birds of prey.  A hawk can easily swoop down and grab the puppy and fly off with it in a
heartbeat.  Please be very cautious.

Shopping for Your Yorkie
I buy all of my supplies that I have mentioned from www.petedge.com.  They have great
prices and very nice stuff.  I buy my potty pads from Sams Club.  They come in a box of 120 for
about 25 dollars.  They are large and the most absorbent that I have used.
